As Janelas Verdes, is a luxury Inn built in a small palace from the XVII Century where it’s believed that one of the most prominent Portuguese writer, Eça de Queiros, would stay when he visited his friends and inspired him for the “Ramalhete” in his novel “Os Maias.” It belongs to the Historic Hotels of Europe and it is located in the Ruas das Janelas Verdes, in the triangle of the ancient quarters of Lapa, Madragoa and Santos, right next to the Museum of Ancient Art. It is only 7 minutes away from the train station of Santos that will take you to the center of the city or in a ride, side by side the sea, to Cascais. One can also take a 15 minute stroll to S. Bento Palace (and my favorite pastry coffee shop, Pasteis de Belém)
It was in this romantic hotel, As Janelas Verdes, on the bank of the Tagus River, that I was received by Mrs. Palmira who offered me a splendid breakfast in the garden where a water fountain conducts the music by the birds. Where one can forget the time I found the normal, but delicious, eggs and sausages, alongside with different types of breads and cakes, fresh juice of orange, apple and pineapple as well as fruit salad. There were jam and other delicacies. But words can’t describe the pleasure of the senses… thus some more photos for you.
Guest can leisurely awake, in the garden of As Janelas Verdes, with the coffee and treat for stomach and soul while making plans for the day, reading the newspaper or simply let the thoughts wonder, forgetting the time. If the weather does not permit then, I am told breakfast is offered inside, by another water fountain, in the dining room with arched walls.
The rooms in As Janelas Verdes, 29 in all, are romantic and warm. Some of the bathrooms still carry the original tiles from the palace. The guests carry the key to the main entrance, even though, this boutique hotel (1st class Inn) has a receptionist to accommodate them and help in any form. There is no mini-bar in the hotel but the guest have a “honesty” bar well replenished for self-serve in the room or in the library, on the last floor, overlooking the Tagus river. Inside, one finds books, DVDs, board-games and newspapers and a room with a fire-place and wood that reminds us of home. In the outside balcony, there are lounge chairs to enjoy the views and the sun that bathe this city often.
I traveled for too many years, through too many unknown cities (in all 5 continents). When in business and alone I would have liked to have found such a cozy place to sleep like As Janelas Verdes… but now, even in the city where I live and love, As Janelas Verdes is definitely a place for a celebration: a romantic date, a wedding, a honey moon, or why not, an intellectual rendez vous meeting with a cocktail? No wonder tourist find their refuge here and return, over and over again.
