As Janelas Verdes, luxury boutique hotel or 1st class Inn in Lisbon?

As Janelas Verdes: gardenAs Janelas Verdes, is a luxury Inn built in a small palace from the XVII Century where it’s believed that one of the most prominent Portuguese writer, Eça de Queiros, would stay when he visited his friends and inspired him for the “Ramalhete” in his novel “Os Maias.” It belongs to the Historic Hotels of Europe and it is located in the Ruas das Janelas Verdes, in the triangle of the ancient quarters of Lapa, Madragoa and Santos, right next to the Museum of Ancient Art. It is only 7 minutes away from the train station of Santos that will take you to the center of the city or in a ride, side by side the sea, to Cascais. One can also take a 15 minute stroll to S. Bento Palace (and my favorite pastry coffee shop, Pasteis de Belém)

As Janelas Verdes Inn: fountain in the gardenAs Janelas Verdes: breakfast in the gardenAs Janelas Verdes: breakfast in the garden

It was in this romantic hotel, As Janelas Verdes, on the bank of the Tagus River, that I was received by Mrs. Palmira who offered me a splendid breakfast in the garden where a water fountain conducts the music by the birds. Where one can forget the time I found the normal, but delicious, eggs and sausages, alongside with different types of breads and cakes, fresh juice of orange, apple and pineapple as well as fruit salad. There were jam and other delicacies. But words can’t describe the pleasure of the senses… thus some more photos for you.

Guest can leisurely awake, in the garden of As Janelas Verdes, with the coffee and treat for stomach and soul while making plans for the day, reading the newspaper or simply let the thoughts wonder, forgetting the time. If the weather does not permit then, I am told breakfast is offered inside, by another water fountain, in the dining room with arched walls.

The rooms in As Janelas Verdes, 29 in all, are romantic and warm. Some of the bathrooms still carry the original tiles from the palace. The guests carry the key to the main entrance, even though, this boutique hotel (1st class Inn) has a receptionist to accommodate them and help in any form. There is no mini-bar in the hotel but the guest have a “honesty” bar well replenished for self-serve in the room or in the library, on the last floor, overlooking the Tagus river. Inside, one finds books, DVDs, board-games and newspapers and a room with a fire-place and wood that reminds us of home. In the outside balcony, there are lounge chairs to enjoy the views and the sun that bathe this city often.

I traveled for too many years, through too many unknown cities (in all 5 continents). When in business and alone I would have liked to have found such a cozy place to sleep like As Janelas Verdes… but now, even in the city where I live and love, As Janelas Verdes is definitely a place for a celebration: a romantic date, a wedding, a honey moon, or why not, an intellectual rendez vous meeting with a cocktail? No wonder tourist find their refuge here and return, over and over again.

Hotel Mundial, Lisbon

Hotel Mundial, view from the Varanda de Lisboa Restaurant visited the Hotel Mundial located  in the heart of Lisbon, “Baixa Pombalina”, a few steps away from “Praça da Figueira” and “Rossio” squares. It was a surprise for us to find that from both the Roof Top Bar and the Varanda de Lisboa Restaurant one can enjoy a panoramic view of the 7 hills of Lisbon, including the St. Jorge Castle (Castelo São Jorge), the Tagus River, Convento do Carmo, Praça da Figueira, to mention a few.

The lobby, at our arrival, was very animated with people coming in and going out, in groups, alone or with kids, snapping pictures and with maps in hands to, what we guess, discover one more living quarter of this historic city or take the famous Tram Nr. 28, which starts its touristic route right in front of this hotel.

The rates for all of its rooms include a complete buffet breakfast, on the first floor’s restaurant, to prepare the guests for a one full day in this exciting city that is Lisbon. There are also adjoining rooms as well as rooms with balconies.

The Varanda de Lisboa Restaurant, at Hotel Mundial, offers, besides the spectacular view, a typical Portuguese cuisine menu having won the 1st prize for Portuguese Regional Dishes in 1992. Can’t wait to be invited to make a review of its menu overlooking the Castle of St. Jorge, and downtown light at night… The Hotel Mundial also has a collection of wines in its World Wine Cellar that is unique in Portugal. A showcase is present at the entrance/lobby of the Varanda de Lisboa Restaurant. One can enjoy a private guide to this cellar and tasting session with an expert sommelier. Don’t forget to mention your interest when you make your reservation.

The Roof Top Bar & Lounge of the Hotel Mundial is open to guests and non-guests every day from 18:30 to 00:00 (17:30 to 23:30 during the winter time). August in Lisbon – Lisbon in the streets “Com’Out Lisbon”

It’s summer, temperatures are really high and Lisbon is the perfect spot for a Vacation (and Business!). But why take a “lazy” vacation (weather on the beach or just visiting a city) or simply commute from the hotel to the office on a business meeting visit when one can have access to the best a lively city has to offer?

For one month, August, the city is going to revive, again (on what is becoming an annual tradition) squares, gardens, belvederes, bandstands and neighborhoods to accommodate, and bring to the streets, the most diverse arts and entertainment events: cinema, music, visual arts. The agenda is still on its ultimatum, but we can promise jazz, movies in the streets (in addition to the continuous show about Lisbon in the Castle of St. Jorge – Castelo de S. Jorge ), plays, classic music.

Sesimbra, Portugal

One more concert at Super Bock Super Rock, at Meco Beach, Sesimbra, Portugal closed with thousands of people cheering the legendary Peter Grabriel. Thousands of people travel to this yearly concert and many have already discovered the secrets that this region hides.

Sesimvra beach, mountain & townSesimbra, a picturesque fishermen’s town, has one of the best beaches in Portugal, with crystalline water wave free, blue flag and white, smooth sands. This village is only 40 minutes away from Lisbon, the capital, and yet it has so much to offer in its surroundings: bars and picturesque fishing restaurants (with fish so fresh that when the boats arrive a wave of seagles follow them), mountains with a castle, golf course only 5 km away, Arrábida (a WTO protected mountain with paths for walks, mountain bike or just bicycling, radical sports), other beaches (Meco famous for its nudism, it actually accommodates non-nudists in its extensive area and Lagoa de Albufeira, to mention a few).

Where in the world do you find a beach-like Mediterranean Côte d’Azur but with Atlantic waters and still so close to the Capital of a country?

In Sesimbra we found 2 lovely places to stay, not only for the concert if you decide to come next year, but for a lovely vacation (all year long).

Sana Sesimbra HotelSana Sesimbra Hotel, a four star hotel with 100 rooms and 4 suites, is just located on the other side of the road to the Sesimbra beach, on its main avenue, Avenida da Liberdade. Comfortable spacious, modern rooms, graced with a veranda with a view to the sea (or to an interior garden), can be adapted with an extra bed if you have children. The suites have a corner living room, with a large sofa and large LCD and a balcony with chairs and tables overlooking the beach. The bathrooms in the suites have large windows. A hallway separates the 3 areas of these suites. In the morning one can take a delicious breakfast outside, on the ground floor, in a wooden balcony while seeing the vacationers taking their place on the beach for a sun treat. The entertainment is all concentrated on the roof of Sana Sesimbra Hotel, with a 360º view of the mountain, castle and Atlantic Ocean. There one can find a place to relax reading a book on a sofa or playing some games (like snooker), children can draw and paint in their tinny table and adults, after a session in their mini-gym and/or a lazy bath on the pool (which is covered in winter or a less “summer-like” day), can still chill in the Jacuzzi or lay in the benches for the so acclaimed suntan. In the evening, meals are also served in the restaurant, on the roof, on a relaxed atmosphere of colorful tables overlooking the lighted Castle of Sesimbra. This Hotel also has 3 meeting rooms, which accommodate from 20 to 150 people. The hotel has 37 paid parking spaces and Wi-Fi in the rooms.

Sesimbra Hotel & SpaSesimbra Hotel & Spa, also a four star hotel, is at the end of the Avenida 25 de Abril, with shops and restaurants animating the streets that separate it from the beach. Also with front view for the ocean, the Sesimbra Hotel & Spa has 84 rooms and 8 suites. Two of the floors are for smokers. The rooms are really spacious, decorated in a light green-bluish summer-like color. The bathrooms are equipped with branded enmities, hair dryer, as well as rope and slippers. The rooms are really spacious and in some of the balconies there are even lazy chairs (either looking at the ocean or at the outdoor pool). The hotel has an outdoor pool for adults and another for children as well as an indoor smaller pool, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and gym, adjoined to the SPA where treatments and relaxing rooms are available at the guest’s request. The restaurant is under the outdoor pool with a water fall separating the guests from the fresh blue and green view of the Atlantic. During the summer, the hotel now offers thematic dinners and entertainment, like the Mexican night for which we were invited. The hotel also has 5 meeting rooms for up to 220 people, that can be interconnected or not depending on the number of people and activities planned. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi in the meeting rooms and Internet access in the rooms, parking and beach parasol, in their reserved beach area, for all their guests. On the ground floor, by the Spa and in the access to the beach there is also the Mosaic bar – a area decorated with hand-painted mosaics that can also be reserved for a welcome get together or warm-walking / team-building event.
