Edinburgh will mark its 20th year of hosting one of the world’s largest new year celebration parties with a host of artistic, musical and sporting events to celebrate the new year of 2013.
Up to 80,000 revellers are expected to descend on Scotland’s capital for a three-day Hogmanay festival.
The Scottish band Simple Minds will headline a concert on New Year’s Eve and 7,000 torchbearers will march to Calton Hill. On New Year’s Day there will be theatrical and musical performances sharing the theme of luck, in a nod to the number 13.
People will be invited to throw a dice to decide their cultural destinations in Edinburgh’s Old Town for the afternoon, in an event called Your Lucky Day. Organisers said visitors could end up jigging at a Highland ceilidh or watching performances at venues including Greyfriars Kirk.
There will be a performance of the traditional play Galoshins, which was performed in Scotland up until the early 20th century, usually by children at people’s doors or in their front rooms.
Sport will be central to Edinburgh’s festivities and a triathlon will be open to individuals and teams. Competitors will tackle a 400m swim in the Commonwealth pool, an 11-mile bike ride around Arthur’s Seat and a three-and-a-half mile run. For families and younger runners there will be a separate duathlon race involving two runs and a bike ride.
At an event dubbed Edinburgh’s Dogmanay, crowds will be able to watch Alaskan malamutes, samoyeds, Canadian eskimo dogs and Siberian huskies competing in sleigh races.
The Mercury-nominated The Maccabees, Dundee’s The View and Reverend and the Makers are among the bands taking part. Seven screens will be stationed along Princes Street as DJs play a Hogmanay event called REW1ND3R, touted as the world’s largest open-air nightclub.
Pete Irvine, artistic director of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, said “This is the 20th year of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and every year, in response to ever-changing circumstances, we make it different and create what we believe to be the best new year celebration in the world.
“The REW1ND3R is a bold and exciting development and we think it raises the bar as well as the spirit and temperature. We’re looking forward to a very hot night in our possibly cold but, as always, cool city. This will be another one of 20 great nights to remember.”
Fiona Hyslop, Scotland’s culture secretary, said: “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay promises once again to be a significant highlight of Scotland’s winterfestivals, and will see the year of creative Scotland out in spectacular style. It plays a major part in promoting Scotland’s rich culture and heritage on a world stage. That is why the Scottish government has awarded £200,000 to support the Your Lucky Day elements of this diverse and exciting programme of events.”

The huge success of Bradley Wiggins and the Olympic cycling team has inspired millions of old and new cyclists to get on their bike and tour this great country of ours.
But you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy the sights and sounds of time on a bike. For many, a cycling holiday is a chance to see the countryside and to enjoy some great hospitality with friends in country pubs and hotels.
However, anyone who has organised a group cycling tour will tell you that finding suitable accommodation around the country can be difficult at time. Many hotels don’t have the correct facilities or aren’t flexible enough to meet the group’s requirements.
This is where we at Hotels.tv can step in. Using our network of hotel partners across Scotland and the rest of the UK. We can book accommodation for your group at every stop on your tour. In fact, if you are not sure where to tour, we can make recommendations to meet your group’s abilities and preferences. What’s best of all is this is all free to you.
If you are planning a group cycling holiday around Scotland and looking for some free and local advice please complete the Group Enquiry Form today.
The Phantom Of The Opera is coming to Edinburgh and groups will be flocking to The Playhouse Theatre in the city’s east end to soak up the colour, story and excitement.
For those of you unaware of the Phantom story (there can’t be many of you left), it follows the tale of a shadowy figure who lives beneath the Paris Opera House – this figure is The Phantom. The Phantom is disfigured and feared by those who have heard his plight. The Phantom leaves the solitude of his chambers only to share his love with one beautiful songstress.
This is Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s 2012 production of Lord Lloyd-Webber’s global hit. You can purchase tickets from the official Playhouse website by clicking here.
If you are planning a group trip to Edinburgh to see The Phantom and require accommodation near The Playhouse Theatre then simply complete the Group Enquiry Form and I will find you rooms to suit your budget.
I’m delighted to be able to offer a stunning group property for this August. Subject to availability, I can offer the following based on a group taking a minimum of 5 bedrooms.
Winton House (see photos below) is a 500-year-old private stately home with ties to Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots and Charles I. Architecturally it is one of the most important buildings in Scotland if not Britain, with its carved, twisted chimneys and 350-year-old internal plasterwork.
Set in the heart of East Lothian countryside, the House is 40 minutes from Edinburgh Airport and only 25 minutes from the city centre. East Lothian’s golf courses can be reached within 15 to 20 minutes.
Winton House has a relaxed ambiance, despite its grand architecture and unique collection of artwork and antiques. There are open fires and cosy sofas, and guests have the freedom to wander around at their leisure.

These modern hostel apartments have just come on to the market for summer 2012. During June and July you can book your own private room in an Edinburgh West End apartment for only £30 per night for one person, or £55 per night for two people sharing in June or July.
I took the family to see the London 2012 Olympic flame and runners arrive in Edinburgh last night. There was a tremendous atmosphere amongst the spectators and participants. It’s going to be a great summer for the UK – plus, the sun is finally out in Edinburgh.
There are few apartments left available for this year’s Edinburgh Festival, and certainly very few suites as luxurious as this one I have available for you.
The Edinburgh Residence is a 5-Star town house hotel in Edinburgh’s West End. The Classic Suite has an Armoire containing a microwave, mini-bar and preparation area, it is perfect for long term business and family stays.
